There have been a lot of changes around kids’ playgrounds in and near Port Douglas, Queensland, in recent years. New play equipment has been installed, some of the old playgrounds my kids enjoyed have gone, and excitingly, the new water play area is about to open in 2025. If you’re visiting Port Douglas with kids, here are some of the best playgrounds for your kids to enjoy.
Best Playgrounds In Port Douglas
Water Play at Port Douglas Splash Park

This playground, very close to Fourmile Beach and The Surf Club, is about to open. It’s looking great, and I’ll be able to tell you more once it actually is open.
The splash park is on the site of Jalunbu Park, on the corner of Garrick St. and Mowbray St. It’s very near Beaches Port Douglas Holiday Apartments, a great place for families to stay, right opposite the swimming beach.
Rex Smeal Park Playground, Port Douglas

This is probably the largest kids’ playground in Port Douglas, and it’s very new. It’s under the giant fig trees at Rex Smeal Park.
This is where you want to go for a sunset hangout in Port. Take a picnic or use the gas barbecues.
There are public restrooms here and an accessibility ramp from the car park to the playground.
Bruno Reidwig Park Playground
Bruno Reidwig Park is just behind the beach, south of the splash park, north of Four Mile Park.
Four Mile Beach Park Playground

The Four Mile Playground has also had a makeover in recent years. Again, it’s behind the beach, close to the Barrier Reef Tavern and The Beach Shack.
It’s at the junction of Barrier Street and Reef Street.

Playgrounds Near Port Douglas
We’ll only mention a few good playgrounds here, the ones that might be worth making a trip to or that you might visit on a road trip.
Mossman has a good playground, right opposite the Mossman Market grounds, under the rain trees. This market is open on Saturday mornings.
Muddies Playground Cairns, on the Esplanade, is very large and has water play. There are several good playgrounds in Cairns, but this is the one I’d check out. It always had a separate area for toddlers and very young kids, plus good stuff for older kids.
Palm Cove has its own playground, right behind the beach.
If you’re heading north to Cooktown there is a great playground there, and water play facilities.
